Uptown Chicago Gay Bars Guide: Hidden Gems North of Boystown

· findlucid

Your Uptown Chicago gay bars guide for gay dating in Chicago: Big Chicks since 1986, the Baton drag revue, Jackhammer and Touché leather bars, and The Closet late night dive, with addresses, hours, and a night plan.

Everyone knows Boystown. Just north of it, Uptown and Rogers Park hide some of the longest running queer rooms in Chicago: a neighborhood bar and grill pouring since the 1980s, a drag revue in its 56th year, and two leather institutions on the same block of Clark Street. Less polished than North Halsted, and proud of it.

Every bar in this guide serves a 21 and over crowd late into the night. Hours and showtimes change by season, so check the venue page the week you go out.

Start with food and conversation, save the late rooms for last, and let the Red Line do the driving.

Big Chicks: the Uptown institution

Big Chicks at 5024 N Sheridan Rd has been Uptown's LGBTQ bar and grill since 1986. The walls are covered in art, the patio fills up in summer, and the kitchen turns out burgers, wings, and a weekend brunch that reviewers call some of the best breakfast on the North Side. Hours run Monday to Friday 4 PM to 2 AM, Saturday and Sunday 9 AM to 2 AM.

The room describes itself as a bar for all, and it means it: mixed ages, mixed crowd, zero see and be seen pressure. It is the easiest first stop in this guide, and the regulars will treat you like one fast.

The Baton Show Lounge: drag royalty since 1969

The Baton Show Lounge at 4713 N Broadway is a Chicago landmark, now under new ownership and celebrating its 56th year of the Top of the Nation Revue. This is old school, glamorous female impersonation: costume changes, choreography, and performers who have perfected their craft over decades, in a room that has launched Miss Continental winners.

Main showroom shows run Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 PM and 9:30 PM, with a Sunday drag brunch at 12:30 PM. Listed pricing is a $15 show cover plus a $20 food and drink minimum on show nights, and doors open an hour before the first show. Book ahead on weekends: the room sells out.

Jackhammer: the Rogers Park leather complex

A few stops north, Jackhammer at 6406 N Clark St is Chicago's leather and fetish complex: a main bar up top and The Hole downstairs, with themed parties and gear nights on a packed calendar. It reopened in 2023 after a full renovation that kept the culture and rebuilt everything else.

Listed hours run Wednesday 7 PM to 2 AM, Thursday and Friday 7 PM to 4 AM, Saturday 7 PM to 5 AM, and Sunday 3 PM to 4 AM. Regular nights welcome curious newcomers who come with respect; party nights in The Hole run a strict no cameras rule.

Touché: leather since 1977

Right next door at 6412 N Clark St, Touché has poured as a leather bar since 1977 and hosts fixtures of the scene, including the Mr. Chicago Leather contest weekend. It is open daily: Monday to Friday 5 PM to 4 AM, Saturday 2 PM to 5 AM, Sunday 3 PM to 4 AM. Smaller and more intimate than its neighbor, with a casual front bar and a discreet back bar, it is the kind of place where the bartender learns your drink by the second visit.

The Closet: the late night dive on Broadway

End the night a short ride south at The Closet, 3325 N Broadway, one of Boystown's original gay bars, launched as a lesbian bar in the 1970s and still proudly unpretentious. Karaoke, darts, music videos, and budget friendly drinks carry the room until 4 AM Monday to Friday, 5 AM on Saturdays, and 4 AM on Sundays, opening at noon on weekends. When the Halsted rooms wind down, this one is still going.

An Uptown night: the plan

  • Start at Big Chicks for dinner and drinks while the room is still conversational.
  • Catch the 7:30 PM show at the Baton, or book the 9:30 PM show and linger over brunch plans for Sunday.
  • Ride the Red Line north to Rogers Park for Jackhammer and Touché, gear optional, respect required.
  • Finish at The Closet for late night karaoke, or save it for the weekend noon open.
  • Getting there: the Red Line stops at Wilson and Argyle for Uptown and at Jarvis for the Clark Street leather bars. Pace yourself, stick with your crew, and plan the ride home before the last round.
