London Gay Bars Guide: Soho Pubs, Vauxhall Arches and Heaven
· findlucid
Your London gay bars guide for gay dating in London: Comptons and the Admiral Duncan on Old Compton Street, Ku Bar on Lisle Street, Fire in the Vauxhall arches, and Heaven at Charing Cross, with hours, prices, and a night plan.
London's gay scene runs on two engines. Soho is the historic village: Old Compton Street, where the pubs fill from the afternoon and the crowd spills onto the pavement. Vauxhall, south of the river, is the late shift: railway arches, big rooms, and parties that treat Sunday morning as a target, not a limit.
Every venue in this guide is 18 and over, and the big clubs check photo ID at the door, so carry it. Soho pubs are free. The clubs charge, and the biggest nights sell out in advance.
Do the night in order. Start with a Soho pub while you can still talk, then pick one late room and commit to it.

Comptons of Soho: the Grande Dame
Comptons at 51 to 53 Old Compton Street calls itself the Grande Dame of the street, and it has earned the title: at the centre of the gay scene since 1986, on the site of a 200 year old hotel. The ground floor is one long, loud, friendly room, with an upstairs lounge when you want a seat and a conversation.
It opens at noon daily, to 11:30 PM on weeknights, midnight on Friday and Saturday, and 10:30 PM on Sundays, free entry throughout. Arrive alone and you will not stay that way: Comptons is where groups form and the rest of the night gets decided.
The Admiral Duncan: the pub that came back
The Admiral Duncan at 54 Old Compton Street has traded since at least 1832. On 30 April 1999 a nail bomb attack on the pub killed three people and injured 79. The community rebuilt it, and it reopened about two months later. A memorial chandelier and a plaque keep the memory inside a working, joyful pub.
Today it runs drag, cabaret, and karaoke through the week in one small, warm room, free to enter, open from 1 PM on weekdays and noon on weekends. Go for a pint, take a moment with the memorial, and stay for the show.
Ku Bar: where Soho turns up a notch
Ku Bar at 30 Lisle Street, at the Leicester Square edge of Soho, is the polished end of the strip. The Ku group flagship spreads over several floors, with Klub in the basement, where DJs play chart pop nightly until 3 AM. The main bar is free; the basement club can add a small cover late on weekend nights.
Ku suits the middle of the evening: proper cocktails, a sleeker crowd, and enough energy that the night feels properly started. A short walk from everything else in Soho, it bridges pub hours and club hours.
Fire: the Vauxhall marathon
Cross the river for the late half. Fire at 39 Parry Street packs multiple rooms into the Vauxhall railway arches, with house, techno, and big party brands including Beyond, the long running after hours party. The listed hours tell the story: Friday runs 11 PM to 9 AM, and Saturday runs from just before midnight to 11 AM on Sunday.

Tickets run from about 6 to 25 pounds by event, and headline parties sell out, so book ahead and bring photo ID. Eat first, pace yourself, and use the outdoor terrace as your reset point. Nobody sprints a marathon.
Heaven: the superclub under Charing Cross
Heaven sits under the arches on Villiers Street at Charing Cross and has run since December 1979, one of the founding rooms of modern gay clubbing. It holds about 1,725 people, hosts the G-A-Y club nights, and has put Madonna, Kylie, and Lady Gaga on its stage. Expect pop, spectacle, and a big, young crowd.
One honest note for returning visitors: G-A-Y Bar, Heaven's sister bar on Old Compton Street, closed in October 2025 after 25 years. The G-A-Y nights at Heaven carry on. If you do one big club night in London, make it this one.
A London night out: the plan
- Getting around: the Night Tube runs all night on Friday and Saturday nights on the Central, Jubilee, Northern, Piccadilly, and Victoria lines. Night buses cover other nights.
- Timing: Soho pubs peak around 11 PM. Vauxhall and Heaven get going after midnight.
- Money: Soho pubs are free. Clubs charge, headline nights sell out, and advance tickets beat the door price.
- ID: the big clubs check photo ID at the door, and every venue here is 18 and over.
- Safety: keep phone and wallet secure in packed rooms, agree a meeting point with friends, watch your drink, and plan the ride home early.
