Paris Gay Nightlife Guide: Le Marais Bars, Clubs and Late Nights

· findlucid

Your Paris gay nightlife guide for gay dating in Paris: Raidd and Cox in Le Marais, Banana Cafe in Les Halles, La Champmesle cabaret, Full Metal, and Le Cud after hours, with addresses, hours, prices, and a night plan.

Le Marais is the gay heart of Paris: a few cobblestone blocks in the 3rd and 4th arrondissements where the bars start filling at happy hour and the last dance floor empties near breakfast. Paris elected an openly gay mayor, Bertrand Delanoe, back in 2001, and its Pride march draws hundreds of thousands, up to about 800,000 in a peak year.

Every venue in this guide is 18 and over. Most Marais bars are free to enter. The late clubs and special party nights charge, usually 10 to 20 euros.

Do the night the Paris way. Start on a terrace while you can still talk, then follow the crowd as the rooms get later and louder.

Raidd: the shower show institution

Raidd at 23 Rue du Temple is the most famous gay bar in Paris, and the fame rests on one act: the shower show, running since 2003. Behind glass in a tank built into the wall, the Shower Boys perform every night from midnight, while shirtless bartenders work a packed, high energy room.

Entry is free, happy hour runs until 10 PM with half price drinks, and the bar stays open to 4 AM, 5 AM on Friday and Saturday. Arrive before midnight on weekends or expect a line at the door.

Cox: the terrace where the night starts

Cafe Cox at 15 Rue des Archives has poured since 1995, and it owns the early evening. The terrace spills onto the street, happy hour pulls a friendly, down to earth crowd from 5 PM, and resident DJs play house sets every day as the room fills.

Go between 5 and 10 PM, when Cox is at its best, and use it as your launchpad: entry is free, the crowd mixes locals and visitors, and the bar closes at 2 AM. Start here, then decide where the night goes next.

Banana Cafe: the Les Halles late shift

Banana Cafe at 13 Rue de la Ferronnerie sits in Les Halles, a short walk west of the Marais, and it has been part of gay Paris since 1990. The tropical decor stays, but the room today is a late night dance bar: resident and guest DJs, disco and house, and a crowd that settles in for the long run.

It opens every night from 5 PM to 8 AM, with outdoor seating for the early hours. Entry depends on the night: some nights are free, others run on tickets or a guestlist, so check before you go.

La Champmesle: the queens' cabaret since 1979

La Champmesle at 4 Rue Chabanais, near Palais Royal in the 2nd arrondissement, is the oldest lesbian bar in Paris, opened in 1979 by Josy, who still holds court there. Two floors, cabaret, Tuesday tarot readings, and a loyal crowd make it a living piece of queer history.

It opens Monday to Saturday from 4 PM to 4 AM. Book ahead on show nights, and go ready to watch properly: this is a cabaret room, not background music.

Full Metal and Le Cud: after the bars close

Full Metal at 40 Rue des Blancs Manteaux is the Marais fetish address: gothic cellars, two dark rooms, and a full calendar of themed nights, with a strict leather dress code on Wednesdays. Cover varies by event, and the programme rules, so check the night before you dress for it.

For dancing, end at Le Cud, 12 Rue des Haudriettes in the 3rd. It opens at five to midnight and runs to 6 AM, later on weekends: the after hours room where the Marais lands once the other bars close around 2 AM.

A Paris night out: the plan

  • Getting around: the Metro runs until about 1:15 AM on weeknights and 2:15 AM on Friday and Saturday nights. After that, Noctilien night buses and rideshares take over, and the Marais itself is fully walkable.
  • Timing: Paris runs late. Dinner at 9 PM, terraces from 5 PM, bars at 11 PM, clubs after 1 AM. A club at midnight is an early club.
  • Money: most Marais bars are free, including Raidd and Cox. Clubs and party nights usually charge 10 to 20 euros.
  • Language: the Marais is international and most bartenders speak English, but a little French goes a long way.
  • Safety: keep phone and wallet secure in packed rooms, agree a meeting point with friends, watch your drink, and plan the ride home early.
