Opening of PROPS from Barakei at the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art, curated by Yasufumi Nakamori. The exhibition presents Jason Wee's new conceptual sculptural installation and performance, commissioned by the Museum in response to Eikoh Hosoe's Barakei (Ordeal by Roses) series, the 1961-62 photographs of novelist Yukio Mishima. Wee focuses on the props, a garden hose, a mallet, a candle, a painterly backdrop, that give Hosoe's photographs their ambiguous art-historical and sexual symbolism, and the show traces the photographs across the three editions of the Barakei photobook (1963, 1971, 1984). Free.
